It was 1977 in Geneva, Switzerland. Indigenous delegations from Alaska to the Andes came to the United Nations and gave testimony of today's land rape, destruction of the environment, genocide and rassism. Winona LaDuke , a native high school graduate from Minnesota, showed me a self-drawn map of uranium mining in the US - all mines were on Indian land. Then she told me: /"If you, as a journalist are going to write about us you should focus on the uranium issue. That's killing us." Her words became my guideline. Today I still see her request as the initial spark for my work.
